Century 21 Reynella

2006/07 Country Tennis Club of the Year

About Reynella Tennis Club

The Reynella Tennis Club was established in 1921-2. Two courts were originally located at the northern end of Reynella Oval. The Club re-located to its present position, at the southern end of the oval, just after World War II. Again, there were two courts. A third court was built, using entirely local volunteer labour, in the mid 1960’s. A further three courts were built in the late 1970’s.

In its early days, the Club organised matches, on an ad hoc basis, against other Clubs located throughout the Adelaide area. Just after WWII, the Club played in the Blackwood Association but, after a few years, moved to the Southern Tennis Association. Membership grew rapidly in the 1960’s and 70’s. Teams outnumbered the courts available and it was necessary to hire courts, firstly at Seacombe High School, followed by moves to Morphett Vale High School and then Reynella East High School.

During the period from 1962-3 to 1982-3, the Club enjoyed unprecedented success in winning 13 ‘A’ Grade premierships. For several years the Club had two teams in the ‘A’ Grade competition. In two of those years, the two teams played off in the Grand Final.

With the advent of Saturday afternoon trading, Senior membership declined but has now plateaued. Junior membership has remained strong and this has been in no small way due to the very dedicated volunteers involved in co-ordinating Junior teams.

The Club has produced many fine players, with several going on to play in the Adelaide Premier League competition. Those who have won Southern Tennis Association singles titles include Piret Vaughton, Lynnette Whyatt (Green), Kate Whyatt, Barry Meier, Tom Dyke, Ray Moyle, David Trott and Craig Smith. Junior Association Champions include Carmel Alcock, Lynnette Green, Joanne Christie, Leah Crawley, Magda Kos, Kate Whyatt, Graeme Green, Kim Aiston, Stephen Upton, Ron Vos, Leon Burkhardt, Ben Neijalke, Radek Kochanowski, Raymond Radice and Dylan Ellis.

Achievements:

The site where our courts are located is not level and demands much upkeep. This is done on a voluntary basis. Recent tasks have included building retaining, paths, steps and hand rails, as well as renovating the interior of our Club Rooms.

A recent State Government grant has enabled us to put in a new water line which will mean ready access to water at the site of our new garden.

Our site has its own charm and its family friendly atmosphere is created by the garden surrounds.

Volunteers are always recognised by the Club. Outstanding volunteers are nominated for the annual Tennis SA awards. Since their inception in 1998, individual Volunteer of the Year awards have been won by Craig Smith, Joshua Green (twice), Meg Humphrys and Mia Humphrys, in the Junior Category, and Graeme Green, Lynn Neville and Ray Moyle, in the Senior Category.

Our Club has twice won the Tennis SA Tennis Club of the Year award – in 1998 and 2001.
